Building Wellness Into the Workday: Lunchtime Yoga at the County of Elk

ElkCoLogoColor2_smallAt Trust Connections, we’re proud to spotlight DVHT members who are finding creative, practical ways to support employee well-being. One recent example comes from the County of Elk, where Kary Williamson, Deputy Chief Clerk/HR Specialist, has helped bring wellness directly into the workday through a new Lunchtime Yoga program.

Recognizing the impact that stress, sedentary work, and packed schedules can have on employees, Kary wanted to create something that felt accessible rather than burdensome.

“I wanted this to be something employees could easily say yes to,” Williamson shared. “By offering yoga during lunch, removing the cost barrier, and keeping it welcoming to all experience levels, we’re making wellness part of the workday—not another thing people have to fit in after hours.”

The yoga classes are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. in the county gymnasium and are open to all employees, regardless of prior interest or experience. Mats are provided, and participation is free thanks to grant funding from the Wellness Improvement Program through CCAP.

Yoga offers both physical and mental benefits, including improved flexibility, strength, balance, stress reduction, better sleep, and support for heart health. For Kary, the goal goes beyond the physical benefits.

“This isn’t just about yoga,” she explained. “It’s about giving employees permission to pause, reset, and take care of themselves—even in the middle of a busy day.”

The response has been encouraging, with employees appreciating the opportunity to step away from their desks and reconnect with their well-being in a supportive group setting.

“I’ve been really encouraged by the interest and positive feedback,” Williamson added. “It shows that when organizations invest—even in small ways—in employee wellness, people notice and feel valued.”

By removing cost barriers, offering flexible participation, and securing grant funding, the County of Elk is modeling how wellness initiatives can be both sustainable and inclusive. It’s a powerful reminder that meaningful workplace wellness doesn’t require large-scale programs—just thoughtful leadership and a commitment to people.

We applaud Kary Williamson and the County of Elk for demonstrating how wellness can truly be woven into the workday.
